YORKSHIRE BUILDING SOCIETY is gearing up for the world’s most famous cycling race by becoming an Official Supporter of the Tour de France 2014 Grand Départ which is coming to Yorkshire on July 5 and 6, before the race heads to Cambridge and London on July 7.

Yorkshire’s chief executive, Chris Pilling, has described their involvement as a “proud moment” in what is a special anniversary year for the UKs second largest building society.

Mr Pilling said:  “As an organisation that was founded in Yorkshire 150 years ago, we are very proud to announce ourselves as an Official Supporter of the Tour de France 2014 Grand Départ. We are excited to be able to play our part in supporting the world’s largest annual sporting event right here in our heartland.”

The route passes the doors of several of the Yorkshire’s branches, where they are planning activities to welcome riders and spectators in locations such as: Harrogate, Holmfirth, York, Skipton and Leeds.

Mr Pilling added: “With a global audience of over three billion people, I am sure that the Grand Départ will be an overwhelming success for the region and that our people, customers and members of the public will get fully behind the event and show the world what Yorkshire has to offer.”

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “It is great to announce this partnership. The Tour de France will shine a global spotlight on the whole of Yorkshire providing the perfect platform for Yorkshire Building Society to demonstrate they’re going the extra mile in supporting the region. We have a long-standing relationship with Yorkshire Building Society so we are delighted to be working with them on this unique initiative and maximising the benefits for them and the county.”

Supporting the announcement is 2013 National Team Pursuit Champion and Yorkshire Building Society accountant, Adam Duggleby, 29, of Bramley.

Adam said:  “The Tour de France Grand Depart will be one of the biggest sporting events ever seen in Yorkshire and it will be great for cycling in Yorkshire and the UK. It's fantastic to be working for an organisation that is showing real support for the event and the region and I can’t wait to join the crowds.”

Christian Prudhomme, director of the Tour de France, said: “It is great to announce these new supporters of the Grand Départ. The UK is now the centre of world cycling due to the recent success on the road as well as the track. The Grand Départ 2007 in London was a massive success but since then Mark Cavendish has won 25 TDF stages and Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome have both brought the yellow jersey to Paris. I’ve no doubt the crowds will be even bigger in Yorkshire, Cambridge and London than in 2007, which is why we are so excited to return to the UK in July. I have a feeling the Yorkshire Grand Départ will be a very special moment for Le Tour, for cycling and for all those companies involved like Yorkshire Building Society. It will be a moment not to forget.”

Welcome to Yorkshire led the winning bid to bring the Grand Départ to the county. The Grand Départ of the Tour de France takes place in Yorkshire on the weekend of July 5 and 6. The first stage races from Leeds to Harrogate via the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the second stage races from York to Sheffield via Pennine Yorkshire and the Peak District National Park.

More details about the Grand Départ are available online at – a third stage takes place on July 7 racing from the cycling city of Cambridge to historic heart of London before it returns to northern France.
